These cinnamon rolls check all the boxes - gooey, perfectly spiced, and absolutely delicious! They're great for breakfast or a snack in the afternoon.

These cinnamon rolls are so freaking easy to make and are a favorite in my household (for good reason)!

Perfecting this recipe has taken quite a bit of time but I’m finally happy with the results and so excited to share this recipe with you guys.

Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need for the dough:

  • All-purpose flour
  • Milk
  • Vegetable oil
  • Sugar
  • Eggs
  • Yeast
  • Salt

Here’s what you’ll need for the filling:

  • Brown sugar
  • Butter
  • Cinnamon

Here’s what you’ll need for the cream cheese frosting:

  • Powdered sugar
  • Cream cheese
  • Butter
  • Vanilla extract

Making homemade cinnamon rolls can seem really intimidating because of how many ingredients you need and how many steps there are, but you’ll quickly find out that it’s not that challenging at all!

Speaking of steps, making homemade cream cheese frosting is totally optional but well worth the extra bit of work it takes! Feel free to purchase some pre-made frosting you don’t have the time / aren’t in the mood to make your own though.

How to make cream cheese frosting

If you do choose to make your own cream cheese frosting, this is my foolproof way to do it!

All you need to do is mix the butter and cream cheese together in a mixing bowl with an electric mixer until it’s smooth and lump free.

Then, add in vanilla extract and cream again. Gradually add your powdered sugar until the mixture is combined. Use the cream cheese frosting right away or store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to four days!

This cream cheese can be used on various desserts, too! Take my chai spiced carrot cake for example – this cream cheese frosting was the perfect addition to that.

My #1 tip when it comes to making cinnamon rolls

Let’s not even kid ourselves, cutting cinnamon rolls with a knife is not fun (nor do the cinnamon rolls come out in unison this way).

A lot of people have ditched the knife and have started using unflavored dental floss to cut into their cinnamon rolls (which I used to do, too)! It makes the perfect cut without squishing the cinnamon rolls.

However… my favorite way to roll cinnamon rolls includes a pizza cutter. After I add the filling to my dough, I take a pizza cutter and slice the dough lengthwise. Then, I’ll roll each individual piece!

This method has quickly become my favorite and it’s a tip I share with everyone!

How to make cinnamon rolls

First, you’ll need to warm the milk to about 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the warm milk into a small bowl along with the yeast and sugar and let the yeast bloom for about 5 minutes.

In the bowl of a stand mixer, add the yeast mixture, eggs, oil, and salt. Beat gently and gradually add in the flour until a shaggy dough forms. While the dough is forming, lightly dust your work surface with some flour.

Turn the dough out onto your work surface and kneed until a smooth dough forms. Shape the dough into a bowl and place it in a medium sized bowl, covered with a kitchen towel. Let your dough rise for 30 minutes.

Once the 30 minutes has passed, make the filling! Combine the melted butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a small bowl and set it to the side.

Roll the dough into a 10 X 15 inch rectangle with a rolling pin. Spread the filling onto your dough and, with a pizza cutter, slice the dough lengthwise and roll each individual piece. Place the cinnamon rolls into a lightly greased 10-inch square baking pan and allow them to rise another 30 minutes.

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and bake the cinnamon rolls for 25 minutes or until golden brown. While they’re cooling, make your frosting!

Beat the softened butter and softened cream cheese together in a mixing bowl with an electric mixer until it’s smooth and lump free. Then, add in vanilla extract and cream again. Gradually add your powdered sugar until the mixture is combined.
Spread your cream cheese frosting onto your warm cinnamon rolls and enjoy!

How long do cinnamon rolls stay fresh?

If left on the counter at room temperature, cinnamon rolls can last for 2 days.

However, if you place them in the refrigerator, they’ll last for a week. If you freeze cinnamon rolls, they can last up to two months!

Regardless on how you plan to store them, make sure you put them into an airtight container (or wrap them tightly with plastic wrap).
