If you're looking for the ultimate dessert, these chocolate orange brownies are for you. They're chewy, gooey, and bursting with flavor!

I know that people go crazy over chocolate covered strawberries, but I’ve always been a chocolate and orange girl myself. These chocolate orange brownies are some of my all time favorite brownies that I’ve ever made (and that’s saying something)!

Gooey chocolate mixed with fresh orange juice… say less. You need these brownies in your life!

Why you’ll love these chocolate orange brownies

They’re bursting with chocolate orange flavor! If you’re a fan of chocolate and orange (like me), these brownies will be your new best friend.

Less dirty dishes. You don’t need a stand mixer to make these chocolate orange brownies! In fact, all you need to make these orange brownies is a sauce pan and a baking dish!

These chocolate orange brownies are so nostalgic. These brownies will remind you of Terry’s Chocolate Orange candies. If you’ve never had them, you need to!

Ingredients

To make these chocolate orange brownies, you’ll need:

  • Butter – Both salted and unsalted butter works in this recipe!
  • Cocoa powder – I used King Arthur Black Cocoa Powder – but any works!
  • Sugar – I used granulated sugar in this recipe, but dark brown sugar also works!
  • Flour – All purpose flour works best here!
  • Eggs
  • Orange juice – I recommend using fresh squeezed orange juice for these chocolate orange brownies. Fresh orange juice is best if you ask me!
  • Vanilla extract
  • Baking powder
  • Salt
  • Orange slices – TBH, the orange slices are completely optional BUT I highly recommend adding them to the top of your chocolate orange brownies. If you’re a bit hesitant to add orange slices, feel free to add some orange zest instead!
  • Chocolate bar – I absolutely love dark chocolate so I used that for my brownies! If you’d rather milk chocolate (or even white chocolate) use that instead. Or, use a mix of milk and dark chocolate.

Pro tip – Want a bit more orange flavor? Feel free to add 1 TSP orange extract to your chocolate orange brownies!

How to make chocolate orange brownies

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking dish with parchment paper.

Melt butter in a medium size saucepan and, when melted, remove from heat. Sift the cocoa powder into the melted butter and stir until well incorporated. Then add the sugar, freshly squeezed orange juice, vanilla extract, and eggs. Whisk vigorously until fully combined.

Sift in the flour and fold the brownie batter together with a rubber spatula. Now you’re ready to pour the brownie batter into your prepared pan and bake – but before you do…

… I highly recommend you add some extra dark chocolate and orange slices to the top of the brownie batter. If you don’t want to add orange slices, feel free to add some orange zest instead!

Bake for 40-45 minutes or until the edges are firm and a toothpick comes out with just a few crumbs on it. Cool the brownies completely before slicing – this allows your chocolate orange brownies to firm up a bit more.

Can I freeze chocolate orange brownies?

Your average brownie can be frozen for up to three months and these chocolate orange brownies aren’t any different! Though, I’m not sure if I’d add the orange slices on top if you plan on freezing these orange brownies. I’d add orange zest to the mixture instead!

  • Total Time: 55 Minutes
  • Yield: 12 Servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 TBSP butter
  • 1 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 TBSP orange juice, freshly squeezed
  • 1 TSP vanilla extract
  • 1/2 TSP salt

  • Optional – 1 – 2 squares chocolate crushed for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking dish with parchment paper.
  2. Melt the butter in a saucepan and, once melted, immediately remove from heat. Sift in the cocoa powder and then add in the sugar, orange juice, vanilla extract, and eggs. Whisk vigorously until fully combined.
  3. Sift in the flour and fold the brownie mixture together with a rubber spatula. Pour the mixture into your prepared baking dish and evenly spread out.
  4. Thinly slice an orange and place on top of the brownie mix. Add as little or as many orange slices as you’d like here! This is also where you’d top off the brownie mixture with broken pieces of chocolate – but that’s completely optional.
  5. Bake for 40-45 minutes or until the edges are firm or until a toothpick comes out with just a few crumbs on it.
  6. Cool brownies completely before slicing! This allows your chocolate orange brownies to firm up a bit more, leaving to more even squares.
