What do you get when you mix a silky, smooth hummus with one of the best spice blends around? Za’atar hummus.
This has become my absolute favorite way to eat hummus and I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon! Hopefully it becomes a favorite for you, too!
Ingredients
- Chickpeas
- Tahini
- Freshly squeezed lemon juice
- Water
- Olive oil
- Garlic
- Za’atar spice mix
I personally wouldn’t cut anything from the list above. I know there are a few people out there who make homemade hummus without water, but I truly believe that ice cold water equals a silky smooth hummus!
How to make za’atar hummus
Making homemade hummus could not be easier! Basically, all you need to do is combine the chickpeas, tahini, freshly squeezed lemon juice, and garlic into a food processor (or blender). Once blended, slowly add in the ice cold water until the mixture is silky smooth.
Add the hummus to a bowl or a plate and top with olive oil and the za’atar spice blend. Serve with your favorite crackers or veggies and enjoy!
I’ll typically add some additional chickpeas and kalamata olives to the top of my za’atar hummus but this is completely optional. Some fresh parsley is great, too!

How to properly store za’atar hummus
Homemade hummus should keep in the fridge for 2-4 days if placed in an airtight container.
Frequently asked questions
If you have a question not answered below, leave a comment and I’ll do my best to answer it!
Do you have to peel chickpeas?
I would 100% recommend peeling the “skin” off of the chickpeas. Your hummus will be so much creamier if you do this!
Is there something I can use in place of chickpeas?
Yes!!! White beans (AKA cannellini beans) can be used in place of chickpeas and you’ll end up with a very similar dip.
Can I use aquafaba in place of ice cold water?
You can! I don’t particularly like the taste of it which is why I choose to use ice cold water, but feel free to use it if you’d like!
