How to make homemade salted toffee

Here’s how you can make homemade toffee without a candy thermometer, step by step!
Step 1: Line a baking tray with a sheet of parchment paper and set to the side (you’ll need this to be prepped beforehand – don’t wait until the last minute to prepare your baking tray).
Step 2: Add all three ingredients to a saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat. Whisk the mixture vigorously during this step to ensure that it doesn’t burn at the bottom of the pan. As you continue to stir, you’ll notice that toffee mixture is starting to get deeper in color.
Step 3: When you’ve reached a dark brown / amber color, pour the toffee onto your prepared baking tray. With a rubber spatula, spread the toffee into a nice even layer. Here, you can add on flaky sea salt, chocolate, or chopped nuts!
Step 4: Allow your toffee to cool for at least an hour or two. Break with a wooden spoon into desired pieces and enjoy!
Here’s a quick before and after of what your toffee will look like as soon as you pour it onto your baking tray:

How to store & freeze homemade salted toffee
Depending on how you store your homemade toffee, you could have it for two weeks to a few months!
If your plan is to store it in an airtight container on the counter, it’ll last you about two weeks.
If you store it in an airtight container in the fridge, you’ll have it for about four weeks.
If, however, you want to make this toffee and freeze it, it’ll last for up to four months.
How do I know if my homemade toffee is bad?
Lets say you’ve had your toffee for a few weeks but when you go to grab a piece from the container, you notice that the smell is a bit… off.
Ladies and gentlemen, that is your first sign to not eat the toffee.
When toffee gets that certain “smell” to it, chances are, it’s gone bad. Another way to tell that your homemade toffee has run its course is if you go to grab a pieces and the pieces are a bit grainy.
